The federal government currently provides 26%Investment Tax Credit (ITC)for systems installed in 2022. However, for systems installed in 2023, this rate will drop to 22%. If the credit is not renewed, it will expire in 2024. If you're considering installing solar panels in a year or two from now, that means you might want to expect it to cost even more.
If you don't have the cash to pay for the solar panels directly, there are plenty of solar panel financing options available to you. The catch is that the average interest rate on such loans is more than 6%, which means you end up spending quite a bit more money while paying the interest.
To power a large house, you need plenty of panels
To determine how many solar panels you need, you must first understand how much electricity your home uses on a monthly basis. Your personal total should appear on your electricity bill as "kWh used" for a month's requirement. If you are building a home and unsure of your energy needs, consider that an average household uses 867 kilowatt hours (kW/h) of electrical energy per month.
Once you know your kW/h figure for the month, divide by 30 to get a daily kW/h figure. For example, if you consume 900 kW/h per month, this corresponds to approximately 30 kW/h per day. As a rule of thumb, a solar panel generates 1 kW/h per day. So for this example you would need 30 solar panels on your house.
This can be disadvantageous for both cost and the logistical challenges of having so many solar panels on your roof. Some homes are not well suited for solar panels
Not surprisingly, solar panels rely on the sun. If your home doesn't get an even amount of sunlight, this may not be an option for you. What's surprising is that even homes in seemingly sunny areas may not be good candidates for solar power: The biggest factor determining the potential efficiency of solar panels is the latitude a home is located at.
For example, even if a home in a high latitude has mostly sunny weather, the overall effect for the year is that there are fewer hours of sunshine. Unless you are able to "bank" solar power with a battery or buyback program from your local utility, homes up north may not receive enough solar power to support themselves during the darker winter months.
Even closer to the equator, homes in places where there are many cloudy, rainy days may not receive enough sunlight. The same applies to houses in densely shaded areas.
If you're off-grid, you'll need to plan for solar batteries to store the energy you get during the day for use overnight or during darker times of the year. With installation, home batteries for solar panels cost about$10,000 to $20,000.

For the right buyers, having solar panels on the home can be an advantage. However, you don't always know who is looking at your home - so it's best not to assume that the solar panels will significantly improve the resale value.

This already begins in the production process, when greenhouse gases are released during the manufacture of solar modules. According to the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, it takes between one and four years to "pay for itself" on the energy used to manufacture the solar panel system.
When you need to dispose of solar panels, it's not that easy to take them to the landfill. Solar panels are made with substances like cadmium and lead acid, which are fine if they're in the panels. However, they are dangerous pollutants when they get into the soil. Because of this, you must plan to dispose of solar panels properly, and there are currently no widespread recycling options.
